selective breeding: gouramy

Our Center has been planning to use selective breeding programme to genetic improvement on Indonesian giant goramy.  Main objectives is developing efficient technique to cultivate of Indonesian Giant Gorami with emphasing to produce and distribute fish brooder as an effort to enhance gouramy production in fisherfolk level.

The fish is a native species in our western archipelego and traditionally cultivated for a long time, highest price amongs freshwater fish consumption, accepted as a consumption fish in most Indonesian people and great opportunity as commodity’s export to foreign market either as fish consumption or ornamental fish.  As far, there hasn’t effort yet to provide brooder using controlled production.

Biologically, first maturity of fish brooder 2,5-3 kg/fish in weight and 3-4 years in age, low fecundity (1.500 -2.000 eggs/kg), spawn naturally either communal (e.g 20 male : 60-80 female in a pond) or pair (e.g 1 male : 3-4 female in a batch), need a time range to build nest (normally 5-14 days and longer in rainy or environmental calmless) before spawning, slow yolksac absorption (8-10 days at 27-28 oC) and organogenesis (36-40 days at 27-28 oC to complete organ formation like adult), 10-12 months in age to reach a marketable/consumption size and often diseases breakdown in climate transition, especially Aeromonas hydrophilla. In addition, there is no establish technology either environmental manipulate or hormonal stimulate to accelerate of fish spawning.

Our plan aims to growth increasing and disease resistance improving.  We thought family selection as selective breeding strategy would be choose.  But, technical procedur hasn’t yet compiled completelly.  I’d like to invite you to collaborate in our research, even as a suggest to make better our programme.  Please give me a suggest as “a comment” (in below this page) or “via email

There’s limited national budget to work this and take a long time.
